Tweed Regional Gallery is a must visit in The Tweed, featuring an ever-changing program of exhibitions and home to the impressive Margaret Olley home studio recreation on permanent display. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible with undercover mobility parking opposite the lifts. Two wheelchairs are also available free of charge and can be pre-booked by calling 02 6670 2790. Tweed Regional Museum is also fully wheelchair accessible with a designated parking spot on Bent Street. Inside you’ll find creative exhibitions showcasing the history of the Tweed and video content has captioning.
The 24km Tweed section of the NEW Northern Rivers Rail Trail offers fun for all ages and abilities. The trail traverses through hinterland villages visiting art galleries, farmstays, charming country eateries and scenic vistas. Popular attraction Husk Distillers offers tours of their gin and rum distillery and offer features including accessible parking, toilets and step free guest areas. Breweries such as Pickled Pig Brewery and Earth Beer Co offers tastings and tours and offer accessible parking and toilets. River cruises such as Tweed Eco Cruises offers a ramp to access the vessel, however it’s recommended to call 07 5536 8800 to discuss your needs in advance so they can best accommodate your requirements to ensure an enjoyable cruise on the Tweed River.
Tweed Shire Council has four beach wheelchairs available for use by locals and visitors. They are free of charge and are stored at Fingal Head Beach SLSC, Cabarita Beach SLSC, Tweed Holiday Park Pottsville South and Tweed Heads Community Centre. Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre is a great way to cool off and the Murwillumbah Centre offers concession entry and no charge for carers plus a wide range of accessible features. Drop off points are located outside the front entrance and nearby there is undercover and accessible parking spots. There is ramp access and pathways are free from obstructions with no steep slopes. Accessible features include two designated change rooms with shower, toilet, hand basin and a change bed. A mobility lift allows guests to access the pool in a dignified way and there are gradual ramp and handrails on both sides for easy access to the pool for all.
Most hotels, motels and holiday parks cater for travellers with mobility requirements. If you’re looking for a unique place to stay, perhaps consider Chesson Lodge, a mid-century modern styled four-bedroom home complete with accessible features. Coolamon Station offers a purpose built fully accessible cottage sleeping up to 6 guests in style and event venue for family celebrations or a fabulous farm stay. For the ultimate in luxury stays, book the accessible room at famed Halcyon House featuring a wheelchair accessible bathroom fitted with a roll-in shower, grab bars and mounted shower seat.
The Tweed’s major Clubs such as Club Tweed, Twin Towns and Seagulls, have the most facilities for those with accessible needs. Chef hat winning Tweed River House offers sophisticated sips from their lawn bar and a chair lift to reach the upper-level river terrace for dining in style with stunning views of Wollumbin Mt Warning.
