Owners — Pipit Restaurant
Ben & Yen opened Pipit, their first restaurant, in Pottsville in 2019. A celebration of coastal lifestyle, great local produce and wood-fired cooking, Pipit was named Regional Restaurant of the Year (Good Food Guide 2020). Ben grew up in the Northern Rivers and has worked at Noma in Copenhagen, Esquire in Brisbane and Paper Daisy at Halcyon House. Yen is a designer and project manager in urban and graphic design and in 2011 received the QLD Premier’s Emerging Design Leader Award. The Devlins are enjoying a permanent sea-change — a house, a kid and a restaurant later — they are here to stay!
Explore: The hinterland’s network of small towns feel like “hidden gems”. We love Tumbulgum for House of Gabriel and the scenic waterfront, Tyalgum for the Tyalgum Gelato Shop and Chillingham for Bucks Farm.
Sip: We get coffee from Artful Barista, the red caravan at Casuarina — it’s nice that small operators still have a space too.
Eat: We love bread and pastries so it’s been great to see more bakeries in the last years — Bread Social in Tweed Heads, Cubby Bakehouse in Chinderah, Baked at Ancora are some of our top picks.
Shop: We’re excited that Grit Ceramics has opened a new studio space and store in Pottsville that retails ceramics direct to the public.
Do: We’re lucky to live close to the beach so we tend to gravitate there for walks and surfing…though we don’t have much free time so it’s probably not as often as we would like these days!
